A new season started on Sunday at the new venue of Jack Hunts school in Peterborough. Division 2 champions South Lincs Steelers blues were in action in Division 1, along with now Over 60's team Whites in Division 3. Conditions were difficult in torrential rain.
Tough first game for blues with a few players missing through injury and availability, against the reigning Division 1 champions Sleaford. The first half was goalless but Sleaford had 3 running offences against them within minutes. Sleaford took the lead early in the second half, which blues players protested for what they believed to be another running offence, but the goal stood. Their 4th running offence did come and Captain Mike Wells put the penalty away. From that moment blues played a cautious passing game and did well keeping possession. Match ended with a single goal each, a well earned draw.
Another tough game for blues against a much changed Leverington Lions that included ex steelers players Steve fry and in goal Wayne Beasant. Lions had some good early passages of play and was rewarded with a goal that went out of the reach of keeper Chris Briston. Blues equalised with a nicely slotted goal from Steve Hammond. A few minutes later Mike Wells scored a second to take the lead after a good passage of play. From then on it was all blues. Another penalty of the day for Blues came after their 4th running offence by Lions, but was well saved by Wayne Beasant from Mike Wells spot kick. A big well done to debutants Barrie Skinner and Jamie Scaife.
Whites first match was against Leverington Tigers. A Tight game with very little goal mouth action. The only goal of the game did come for Tigers by a Wayne Beasant free kick after whites failed to closed him down, a defeat but an encouraging Whites display.
Next up for whites was Hampton UTD Royals. There was some good early football from both sides but it wasn't long before Whites exerted their dominance. A few good interchanges of passing between whites players resulted in a well taken goal from Barry Lyon. Barry then doubled his tally and whites total with another fine effort that nestled in the back of net. Mike Wells struck the 3rd for Whites from long range that ended a great first Victory for the newly formed team. A well done to Steelers debutant June Bond.
In all a great start to the season for both teams with early points on the board. Everyone played well and all went home happy yet very soggy. Division 2 and Steelers Reds team, start their campaign in October.
